Ben Nevis, “the mountain with its head in the clouds,” is the loftiest peak in the British Isles at 1,345 metres. Rising above the town of Fort William, its Gaelic name Beinn Nibheis - The Venomous Mountain - hints at tempest and awe. The summit, capped with the ruins of a Victorian observatory, commands views across the Highlands and out to the isles. Climbers know its cliffs as a winter playground, while walkers trace the well-trodden Pony Track to stand on the roof of Britain.
